Start of CP3, CP4, and CP5
In Q2 2026, three new community projects—BeeFAIRChain, FAIR-PLAY@DRFZ, and BioBlock-bloxberg—began their work within the BioBlock innovation community. Together, the projects address complementary stages of the research-data lifecycle, from FAIR data generation and secure exchange to interoperable blockchain infrastructure.
BeeFAIRChain, Community Project 3, is a consortium of the INET group at TU Berlin, Datarella, and the ISW Institute at the University of Stuttgart. As BioBlock’s central implementation and prototyping project, it translates the platform components defined in CP1 into working technology while integrating the governance and community requirements developed in CP2. The project is developing a prototype decentralized data-trading platform that combines FAIR-compliant data exchange, intellectual-property protection, and automated transactions.
FAIR-PLAY@DRFZ, Community Project 4, is led by the German Rheumatism Research Center Berlin (DRFZ). It connects BioBlock’s digital infrastructure with hands-on laboratory work. Its FAIR-by-design approach aims to ensure that experimental data are fully contextualized, reproducible, and FAIR from the planning stage through execution. While BeeFAIRChain focuses on securely sharing existing data, FAIR-PLAY@DRFZ begins earlier in the data lifecycle by improving how those data are generated.
BioBlock-bloxberg, Community Project 5, is led by bloxberg of the Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL). It integrates the BioBlock consortium blockchain with bloxberg’s established public blockchain infrastructure, creating a practical connection between the developing BioBlock ecosystem and an existing international network of research institutions.
The launch of these three projects marks an important step in putting BioBlock’s shared technical and governance foundations into practice. By working across data generation, exchange, and infrastructure, CP3, CP4, and CP5 strengthen BioBlock’s goal of creating secure, transparent, and reusable biotechnology research data.
All three projects are funded as part of the DATIpilot BioBlock Innovationscommunity by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR).
